Q: Who is eligible to apply for the NEW-STEM program?  
A: Warrant Officers (WOs) ranks W1-W5 and Non-Commissioned Officeres (NCOs) ranks E5-E9, who are newly separated or retired. 
 

Q: When is the deadline for submitting my application? 
A: We are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2010 semester. The deadline is April 2, 2010. All applicants much be reitred or separated by July 31, 2010. Please note: We accept applications throughout the year. Depending on when we receive your application and your separation date, which will tell us what semester your application may be considered for selection. We follow the semester schedule for UAHuntsville: Fall semester beginning in Mid-August and Spring semester beginning in early January.

Q: Will I need to submit a resume when applying for the program?

A. Yes, we require a resume and VMET, in addition to the supplemental application for the NEW-STEM Program. Separately, UAHunstville requires an admissions application and official transcripts of any universities/colleges previously attended.
 

 

Q: If I already have a Bachelor’s degree, can I pursue a graduate degree in an engineering field with the NEW-STEM program? 
A: No, the NEW-STEM program is designed for WOs and NCOs seeking a Bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering. However, if you would like to seek a Bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering, in addition to the degree you already have, then we encourage you to apply. 

 

 

Q: When will I need to be in Huntsville to start classes? 
A: Participants selected for the Spring 2010 semester will begin classes at UAHuntsville January 11, 2010, with orientation one week prior. Participants selected for the Fall 2010 semester will begin classes at UAHuntsville August 16, 2010, with orientation one week prior. There will be additional discussions with the employer to determine the start date for the Co-Op position. 
 

 

Q:  As a NEW-STEM participant, would I be eligible for on-campus housing at The University of Alabama in Huntsville?
A:  The University of Alabama in Huntsville does not provide on-campus housing for married couples, but all other single, individuals are encouraged to apply for on-campus housing. Click here for the UAHuntsville Housing Application.  
   

Q: What salary amount can I expect with the co-operative/work study program with the participating organizations in the NEW-STEM program? 
A: Salary amounts will differ with each participating organization, but most will range from $35,000.00 to $40,000.00. 
 

Q: What can I expect from my GI Bill Benefits? 
A:  There are two GI Bill Benefit Programs: The Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill. Please click here to learn more about the benefits. Note: The term “36 months of benefits” refers to academic months.  This means you will have up to 8 semesters (four years) to complete a traditional academic education. 


Q: How do I know if I am eligible for GI Bill Benefits? 
A: You qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill if you have served on active duty at least 90 aggregate days beginning on or after September 11, 2001, or if you were honorably discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days of continuous service. You qualify for the Montgomery GI Bill (Active Duty) if you have an honorable discharge AND a high school diploma or GED, or in some cases 12 hours of college credit AND if you meet the requirements of one of the categories, lised on this website. Q: Where should I expect to have my Co-Op work program? 
A:  The current participating organizations are the DoD’s Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Northrop Grumman Corporation, Intuitive Research and Technology, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. The NEW-STEM Program staff is also negotiating positions with several other private sector companies in the Huntsville area. 
 

 

Q: What will happen to my security clearances while I am in school and doing my co-op? 
A: Participants will have to maintain a security clearance throughout the duration of the program. 
 

 

Q: Will my spouse have a difficult time finding a job or career in Huntsville?
